ALFREDO GOMEZ SECURES FIFTH OVERALL FOR BEL-RAY HUSQVARNA FACTORY RACING
At the end of a drama filled night Husqvarna’s Alfredo Gomez finished fifth overall at the first round of the 2015 FIM SuperEnduro World Championship. Faced with a demanding track and what many considered to be the strongest ever line-up of indoor enduro specialists, Gomez secured consistent results despite making mistakes in all races.
The night’s opening Prestige class final saw Alfredo claim the holeshot and remain out front for three laps. Looking extremely comfortable around the unpredictable course, in trying to pass a stranded, lapped rider Alfredo was knocked off the track and off his bike. Frustratingly, in an instant he went from race leader to third with further mistakes seeing him eventually place fifth.
In the second and third finals Alfredo saw small mistakes prevent him from placing higher than the sixth and fifth place results he secured. Showing good speed, and ensuring a strong start to his 2015 SuperEnduro campaign, Alfredo sits just five points behind third placed Cody Webb in the SuperEnduro World Championship standings.
While it was a good night for Gomez it was a frustrating one for Danny McCanney. Making his international Husqvarna debut having had very little time to familiarise himself with his new machinery ahead of the event, Danny, like Alfredo, made a strong start to the night. Sixth in the opening final, Danny went on to place 12th and 13th in the following two races.
Both Alfredo and Danny will journey to Reisa, Germany on January 3 for the second round of the 2015 SuperEnduro World Championship.
Alfredo Gomez: “I think I got the best start I’ve ever had in the first final. I took the holeshot and lead the race for three laps. I was feeling really good. Then I caught a lapped rider. I tried to pass to the left of him in the water and he moved the same way. That knocked me off my bike and off the track. Then I started to make many mistakes, because I wanted to win. I fell some more times and eventually finished fifth. In the second and third races I made some mistake more, but even with these mistakes I was not so far from the top three. I’m looking forward to the rest of the championship.”
Danny McCanney: “Things didn’t go like I hoped they would, so I’m a little frustrated with my night. They started well with a sixth in the first race, but after that things didn’t work out so well. Being my first race for Husqvarna I really wanted to do well, but like a lot of riders things didn’t go to plan. The track was pretty physical, there were lots of places where it was really easy to make mistakes. I learned a lot, things will be better in Germany.”
